Morning Sickness: How to Manage It at Home?

Morning sickness is something that can bother a lot for women with pregnancy! Most of pregnant women will get it, because it is one of the most major symptoms of pregnancy. And the big question is how to prepare yourself so thus you can manage it better? Let’s discuss more some helpful tips on how to manage morning sickness at home?

Two major problems that you may get are nausea & vomiting! Both can attack you at the same time, which usually occur in the first trimester of your pregnancy. And there are some helpful home treatments and tips before calling your doctor or nurse-midwife, especially if you get morning sickness attack with normal symptoms.

But sometimes in several cases, morning sickness can lead to severe nausea or vomiting which means you need to call doctor to get the advanced treatments. Severe vomiting or nausea can cause weight loss (malnutrition) and even dehydration.

Back to the topic, the following are some helpful tips to manage and minimize vomiting or nausea during pregnancy at home:
  1. Keep calm and manage your emotion as well during pregnancy! Keep far away from fatigue and stress otherwise your morning sickness will be worse. So, make sure you get adequate rests during pregnancy!
  2. You may also be more sensitive to smell certain things during pregnancy like caffeinated-tea, coffee, milk, or orange juice. Therefore, avoid certain things that can make you feel and get nauseated!
  3. Be careful when you want to consume an iron supplement, because iron is something that can also make worse for the nausea symptom that you feel during pregnancy. Therefore, don’t forget to discuss first with your doctor before taking any iron supplements!
  4. Eliminate the intake of fatty food (avoid it if you can) and don’t forget to consider the intake of protein for your body!
  5. In the morning, you may feel a disturbing nausea more often. For this case, you can try with small crackers or other small snacks then eat them before getting out of your bed. And remember to get out of your bed slowly, and before you do it -- don’t forget to give a few minutes for a small snack that you eat before to digest.
  6. Make sure your body keep far away from dehydration (keep hydrated)! Make sure you drink adequate water every day.
  7. Consider as well the food that you eat and make sure your stomach is not empty, but avoid too much! You can try with several small meals each day in order to keep food in the stomach. You may also think to try with 3 large meals a day, but much better to try with several small meals.
For more detailed information, discuss with your nurse-midwife or doctor, particularly if you get severe symptoms of morning sickness, like get vomiting more than three times a day, unable to get or take fluids, experience high temperature of fever, and so on.
