Transient Ischemic Attack (Mini Stroke) Symptoms and Causes

Transient ischemic attack (TIA) or also familiar known as ‘mini stroke’ is one of types of stroke. A temporary deficiency in blood supply to the brain is the reason why TIA can occur. Since the decreased blood supply is temporary, the mini stroke symptoms are usually also not lasting.

You might also like to know more detailed information about stroke recovery timeline, before continuing!

However, you should never ignore any sign of TIA because it may be a warning sign that there is something wrong with the mechanism of blood supply to part of your brain. In other words, in many cases, TIA can be an early indication of a future stroke.

People with stroke tend to experience more symptoms (like paralysis or numbness) on one side of their body. This may be related to the mechanism of left & right side of the brain, or may be due to neurologic deficits that occur suddenly!

The sensation, movement, and other mechanisms in the right side of the body are controlled by the left side of the brain. And for the left side of the body is controlled by the right side of the brain.

We all agree that brain is so essential for the body. It can give a significant contribution to control how we move, how we talk & use our vision, and how we think. Therefore, if there is something wrong that affect the mechanism of our brain to work then it can generate some serious health conditions. What else you need to know?

Causes of mini stroke

As mentioned before, TIA is usually generated by a condition when there is a temporary poor blood supply to the brain. The following are more pieces of helpful information about why this mini stroke can occur.

How important are the supply of oxygen and nutrient to the brain?

To keep work optimally, our brain needs adequate oxygen and other essential nutrients. If there is lack of blood supply then the brain will not get adequate nutrient and oxygen, and even in severe stage can make the essential cells in the brain stop working or even dead!

Stenosis

It is a condition when there is an artery narrowing in the brain due to more plaque buildup from arthrosclerosis problem. And in line with the bad lifestyles or other factors will make this narrowing result a completely blocked artery that lines to part of the brain.

Embolism

The narrowing smaller brain artery can occur due to fat, blood clot, or other tissue in the blood that go along with blood vessel. Another common cause associated with this narrowing is emboli. Some common factors /conditions that increase your risk of having emboli are if you have (a) sick sinus syndrome, (b) problems associated with heart rhythm, (c) atrial fibrillation, (d) sickle cell disease, (e) a history of heart attack (especially a recent case of heart attack), or (f) other health problems associated with inflammation in the blood vessels.

If an embolus occurs and your body can resolve it and there is no damaged brain tissue, then you will only experience mini stroke -- not full stroke.

Thrombus

It is a condition of a blood clot that doesn’t break but attach on the wall of one of the brain arteries until it grows bigger in size which then can affect the blood flow in the artery. Ask a doctor for more in-depth information!

Transient ischemic attack symptoms

As written before, mini stroke can be an early sign of a full stroke, particularly for Ischemic stroke! Once you experience TIA, your risk of developing a full stroke will increase drastically.

And once again, the TIA symptoms are also the same as for a stroke but the duration of them are usually not lasting. These symptoms usually only last about a few hours /a few minutes - then will completely disappear!

Nevertheless, it is much better to see a doctor immediately if you experience any symptom of mini stroke, because the present of TIA may help you and your doctor to find a cause as earlier as possible. Furthermore, the early diagnosis of TIA also may help your doctor to minimize your risk of having a permanently neurologic damage.

The transient ischemic attack symptoms that occur are usually also dependent on the particular affected area of the brain. Some common signs of mini stroke may include:
  1. One side of your face may have dropped! It can be indicated from the loss of your ability to keep your smile on both sides. You are more likely to only be able to control one side of your mouth. Furthermore, your ability to speak with your mouth may also be affected -- you tend to be garbled /slurred in speech during the attack.
  2. You also may lose your control to move both of your legs or arms. You may still be able to move your leg /arm but only one side.
  3. Your vision may also be affected during the attack.
Other less common signs may include:
  1. confusion
  2. severe headache that comes suddenly
  3. lack of coordination or balance
  4. dizziness
  5. numbness, particularly on one side of leg /arm
  6. problems associated with swallowing
  7. and in severe cases of TIA, patient may also experience blacking out
