Dairy Allergy Symptoms and How to Live with Them?

There are a lot of things that can become allergen, and one of them is dairy products or milk products. And if you are an individual who suffers from a dairy allergy, one of the best ideas to prevent your dairy allergy symptoms to occur is by strictly avoiding any dairy products (foods that contain milk).

Unfortunately, it is not easy to limit the intake of these foods in your daily living, because as well we know that milk products are so familiar and most people eat them. And it is undeniable that dairy products are one of popular choices to get vitamin D and calcium for your body.

What are dairy allergy symptoms?

The symptoms or signs of milk allergy are almost similar to other allergies, which can be categorized into three major groups; “severe, moderate, and mild”!

Severe dairy allergy symptoms

Any signs in this group are severe, which mean you have to see your doctor immediately to get the right treatments. In rare cases, people with milk allergy may experience what we call as ‘Anaphylaxis’, it is a condition when the body responds the allergen with rapid progress (sudden & can affect the entire body). 

The symptoms may start with unfriendly sudden itching of the face or eyes, and then within minutes will also develop other severe symptoms such as; dizziness (mental confusion), vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramps, and even difficult to breath!   

Moderate reactions

Some common symptoms in this group are itchiness and difficult to breath. And they can begin to spread to some parts of the body.

Although the symptoms in the moderate allergy reactions are not as severe as in the previous group, you should also see your doctor immediately, particularly if you experience difficulty breathing.

Mild dairy allergy symptoms

Some most common signs in this group are congestion, itchy, rash, or watery eyes. They usually don’t spread to other part of your body. If you experience them, you may need only home treatment to get back to normal.

How to live with dairy allergy?

Like mentioned before, the key is you have to keep far away from any milk products. Always check the label of food that you want to buy, and make sure it is “100% milk-free”. Furthermore, you should also know that there are also some manufactures that occasionally replace or change their recipes, and in their new recipes they may add a trigger food.

Below is a helpful table that lists some foods that contain milk and some foods that you can choose to substitute (or milk substitutes). Note; soy is good choice to substitute cow’s milk, but there are also some people who suffer from soy products.
