Pregnancy: Drinking Alcohol (Safe or Not)

During pregnancy, it is much more recommended to avoid drinking alcohol, otherwise can lead to the risk of mental and physical birth defects. You should know that there is around 40,000 babies with variety degrees (1 - 2) of alcohol-related damage. Even light drinking alcohol during pregnancy also can lead to the potential harm for the fetus.

There are a lot of researches and in fact, during pregnancy- no-level volume of drinking alcohol has been proven safe! Therefore, it is much more recommended to avoid consuming alcohol for pregnant women (including wine coolers, wine, hard liquor or beer and so on).

Moreover, in many cases, women usually don’t know when they are actually pregnant for a few weeks or even for a few months. Therefore, for any women who are attempting to be pregnant; they should avoid drinking alcohol for the present.

Hazards of consuming alcohol for women pregnant

In fact, there are number of hazards (ranging from severe to mild), such as; mental retardation and the most severe (FAS – Fetal Alcohol Syndrome which is the combination between physical birth defects and mental birth defects). Mental retardation includes behavioral, learning, and emotional problems and even defects that can involve face, heart or other organs.

There are also some researches and studies say that drinking alcohol during pregnancy will lead to the risk escalation of lower birth-weight (lower than 5 to 0.5 lb) and miscarriage.

Safe or not drinking alcohol while breastfeeding?

One study found that small amount of alcohol in the breast-milk and passed onto the baby can give bad effect to a little slower on walking or crawling (slow down in acquiring motor abilities of the baby). Therefore for better health of the baby, it is much more recommended to abstain from consuming alcohol while breastfeeding (also recommended by AAP – American Academy of Pediatrics).

How about heavy drinking alcohol by the father and FAS?

There are no correlation between heavy alcohol drinking by the father and FAS (at least to date, there are no proofs)! But in order to help women pregnant or women-breastfeeding abstain from consuming alcohol, it is better & more recommended for men to stop drinking alcohol at least in the partner’s pregnancy.
